Personal Evaluation

The planning of the project started off well and organised as we were motivated about all the ideas that could be constructed, however half way through the planning, there was a lot to consider, such as, audience, representation, narrative, genre and soon after we had to consider media language as well, which seemed like a mountain of work before we could get down to capturing all the ideas. Soon after we realised that the pre- production had to be done as our ideas weren’t fully developed.

After finishing most of the paper work we had to work on preparing the shot list, so that we were ready for the filming. The first shoot was a school shoot, which didn’t really go to plan as we didn’t consider the external variables that could affect the quality of the captured clips. While being on set, which was outside on school property it started raining, which meant that we could shoot, however after a while the rain stopped but then we realised that the characters dialogue couldn’t be heard due to the traffic driving pass, so the footage captured from that shoot wasn’t useable.

For the woods shoot the shot list only consisted of six shots, however what I was pretty proud of how we adapted to the location and realised there was much more potential in what could be done in the wood, so on set we used the shot list as a starting point and improvised on it. The footage captured from this shoot was very useful and based the structure/ the base for our trailer.

The editing was challenging, as we had to be specific about what shots that we were going to use, where they were going to be placed shots whilst considering the representation, narrative, genre and media language.

The problem that occurred with our trailer is that it lacked a sense of pace, in places, such as with the montage, the pace is conventionally fast, however we realised that the shots that we captured weren’t fast enough to create this pace, however we compensated for this by the upbeat music that we placed with the montage.

When deciding what music we wanted in our trailer, we were slightly confused as with trailers there is hardly ever a time where there isn’t some sort of non diegetic sound, so we tried out different sounds to see what worked well and what didn’t, by doing this we realised what worked well and got rid of anything that didn’t really go with our trailer.

The overall experience of creating the trailer, magazine cover and poster had is problems, however most of the problem that occurred were fixed whilst the project developed, so I would consider the project and the end products to be a success.

What I think could be improved on if the project was done again would be the amount of research conducted on the intended demographic could be increased and the secondary research done on the industry.
